The darbuka is the main drum of the Arabic musical tradition. It is found in many forms in the Maghreb countries, the Far and Middle East, Asia and European countries inhabited by the Gypsies. The darbuka may be made of metal, wood, clay or porcelain, with a plastic or animal head, tunable or not. It is placed horizontally on the thigh and played with various techniques including strikes with the hand and fingers and muffing of skin. The techniques and rythms vary by region, but the darbuka always offers a great melodic and rhythmic freedom.
